Greatest on the Gridiron: ’90 Vicksburg vs. ’37 Carr Central

Another Vicksburg vs. Carr Central matchup takes place in the 2-7 game of the Gators bracket.

Vicksburg High’s 1990 team is best remembered for one game — the 10-9 victory over Warren Central in October that ended 10 years of frustration against their archrival. The ‘90 Gators did a lot to earn a spot on this list beyond that, however. They finished 10-3, reached the Class 5A semifinals before losing 21-20 to Tupelo, and won the Region 2-5A championship. The region title remains the last for the program.

One of the first great teams from Warren County, the 1937 Carr Central Greenies shut out four opponents and held four others to a touchdown or less in their second season as a member of the Big 8 Conference. A tie against Laurel in September and a 19-12 loss to undefeated Meridian the following week led to a second-place finish in the league rather than a state championship. The Greenies won their last seven games by an average of 23 points.
