COVID-19 death reported in Warren County among more than 50 reported statewide

Mississippi State Health Department officials Friday announced 52 new COVID-19 deaths, one of which was in Warren County. It marks one of the deadliest days during the months-long pandemic and brings the number of Mississippians killed 1,663.

The death reported Friday in Warren County is the county’s eighth death in July and the 25th overall.

In addition to the reported death, 16 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Warren County, bringing the overall number reported during the pandemic to 946. Over the past 14 days, Warren County has reported 265 cases and 564 cases per 100,000 residents, both of which above the threshold the state has used to declare virus hotspots.

But, even though the county has remained above the thresholds — which are 200 new cases over a 14-day period and 500 new cases per 100,000 residents — Warren County is not among the new 33 counties under more stringent state restrictions.

Warren County, and the city of Vicksburg, remains under a mask mandate, and additional social distancing guidelines through at least Sept. 8. Currently, anyone entering a business or public building must wear a mask. Also, in measures that mirror current state restrictions, indoor social gatherings are limited to no more than 10 people, while outdoor social gatherings are limited to no more than 20 people.

As for the state numbers, health officials announced 1,168 new cases, pushing the total number reported during the pandemic to 58,747.
