Organizers cancel Bricks and Spokes due to COVID-19 concerns
One of the passing signs of fall each year — at least for the past decade — has been the annual Bricks and Spokes bike ride, which welcomed hundreds of visitors and bikers to Vicksburg.
Unfortunately, due to concerns about the COVID-19 virus, the 11th annual event will not be held.
Vicksburg Main Street announced the event’s committee made the decision based on recommendations from “local and federal officials.”
“We know this is a huge disappointment for all those that look forward to this annual event,” Kim Hopkins, Vicksburg Main Street executive director, said. “We have people travel to enjoy this bike ride from all over the country … it’s a huge let down for all of us that make this event happen as well as for those that participate in the ride. It has always been a fun weekend full of activities for cyclists and their families”
The annual event offers cyclists — of every skill — the opportunity to ride over the Mississippi River across the Old Highway 80 Bridge, and through downtown Vicksburg.
The other bridge-related event during the fall, the Over The River Run, is still scheduled for Oct. 10. The 5-mile run and race walk is organized by the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation.
